Summary of WIM Welfare Trust UK Relief Operations in Kashmir & Pakistan PDF Print E-mail
• Our first step towards the relief operation resulted in a Ward and an Operation Theatre at Gulab Davi Hospital, Lahore in collaboration with Dr M Akram (MS) and Dr A Rehman (Pathologist) in October 2005. A number of patients from Kashmir were treated in that hospital. WIM also provided transport facilities to these patients. At that time, there was no bed available in Rawalpindi and nearby hospitals, so patients had to be sent to Lahore for treatment.


• Established an Orthopaedic Unit at Holy Family Hospital, Rawalpindi with collaboration of Rawalpindi Medical College Alumni and Hospital Administration where till January 2006 more than 400 major operations have been performed on patients with broken bones. Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Shams Taraiz (London) also visited in December 2005 and January 2006 to do the follow up of these patients.

• In Abbottabad, a Base Camp at Al-Syed Hospital was established with the help of Dr Syed Rafat Ali in October 2005. Dr Ali also supervised the WIM Free Medical Centres at Balakot and Muzaferabad.

• A Free Medical Clinic established at Abbaspur where till December 2005, over 5,000 patients have been treated by Dr Rafiq and Dr Khurshid.

• Short duration Free Medical Camps for day cases were established at various locations in the affected areas during October and November 2005.

• Distribution of food, blankets, tents and school books to the affected areas.

• Co-ordination with other NGOs e.g. to provide paramedical staff and an ambulance service to Balakot till January 2006.

• A Free Medical Clinic was established at Balakot where medical treatment was provided to local public by a paramedic till March 2006 under supervision of Dr S R Ali.

• Consultant Physician from London, Dr Hasan Tahir provided medical care for the first time in a remote area in the mountains of Kohistan in an Army Helicopter with Dr Zafer and two Paramedics. Dr Tahir also visited a number of towns/villages including Abbottabad, Balakot, Mansehra, Bagatram, Ellieah and Hawellia with his team.

• WIM sponsored the visit of 5 doctors (Consultants and GPs) from the UK

• On 18th December 2005, A Primary School and a Free Medical Clinic were opened in Jala-abad Park, Muzaferabad. About 150 children are studying in this school. The clinic is being run by a doctor provided by WIM Welfare Trust UK.

• WIM Welfare Trust UK has started a new Middle School in Gojra (near Muzaferabad). Medical Centre is now shifted at Gojra and run by Dr Waqer Ahmed.
• WIM is also repairing a Madrasa and a Mosque in Muzaffarabad.

• The WIM Welfare Trust UK Main Office was opened in Rawalpindi in December 2005. Mr Arfaq Chishti is looking after the office. Mr Naeem Qureshi is doing all the field relief work under supervision of Dewan Syed Ale Syedi sahib.

• WIM will build 17 homes in Kot Rahmanbad.

• WIM's Website (www.wimuk.com)was established in October 2005.

• All these activities were reported in the press in Pakistan and London. Pakistan TV showed the opening ceremony of the Primary School of the Muzaferabad and alsoshowed the interviews of Dewan Syed Ali Syedi, Mr Naeem and the Principle of the School Miss Sara Karzmi

• Qurbani- WIM organised a Qurbani in Balakot and Muzaffarabad.

• Orphan Sponsorship- WIM recently started a One-to-One Orphan Sponsorship Scheme. For a donation of £20 per month from any one, WIM ensures that the orphan is provided with School fees, travel costs, clothing, footwear, books, stationary and money for the orphan’s family. WIM workers ensure the wellbeing of the orphan.
